I heard the man's footsteps across the room. "In here," he called. "There is light in this room." I followed his voice. He opened a door ahead. Faint light spilled out into the darkness... just enough for me to see my way... I entered and found a drab empty room-- no furniture, adornments or light source-- save a window, a large double-door bay window, with a blue velvet cushion. The King stood before the window gazing out over the blue darkness.

"What is it, my lord?" I asked. Several seconds passed before he answered. "I am not your lord," he said quietly. "Come here to the light." He continued to stare out the window. Once I reached his side and stood staring up at his towering frame he spoke again. "I never thought I'd get to be the thing that all his other children see. Look at me." The sad, hurt face he turned to me contrasted sharply with the brilliance of his white armor. "If only you knew what's inside of me now you wouldn't want to know me somehow. I'm looking for a miracle in my life but in the gray of the morning my mind becomes confused between the dead and the sleeping and the road that I must choose. What mattered to me was the right to be free... Just what the truth is I can't say anymore. Some try to tell me thoughts they cannot defend-- I'm waiting for my heart to lead the way."

"Why didn't you open the door for me before?" I asked. "You heard me knocking." He paused. "I never have opened the door." "Why did you abandon the people?" He laughed at me. "I have never abandoned anyone but myself. I never ran away and hid. I live here. I have always lived here... Unlike you." He paused to sit down on the window seat. "The King bestowed these lands upon me before he left. I know you don't remember that-- it was before your time... But soon, I think, you will... I was devastated at the King's loss and searched for him everywhere I could think of, but he had completely disappeared. I decided to be patient. I knew that one day, when he was ready, he would return and take his proper place. I am glad to see that my long wait was not in vain." He smiled at me.
