I did not understand what he was saying, save one aspect: "You are not the King," I gasped. "No. I sought him perhaps as long as you have." "Well, who are you then?" "I am the White Knight of the blue darkness. I have tried to rule these lands as he would have done, but I do not have his power or influence. I wish to help this land, much in the way I think you wish to, but it cannot be done without the King."

I hung my head. "I'm sorry I mistook you." He held up a hand. "Tell me," he continued, "what has brought you here?" "What do you mean?" "Well, you came for the King? You have come a long way. Very few ever get this far-- and still you have not found him." "Yes. But I insist he is here. He must be! I have encountered and withstood far too much not to reach my goal." "You're right." "You mean the King is here?" He looked me straight in the eye and said emphatically, "Oh yes." "Where? I demand to see him!"

He stood up and began pacing about. "Why, he's right here... in this very room." Anger was beginning to brew inside of me. "More tricks! Lies! You're just like the others! I won't stand for this any longer!" I stood and started to storm out of the room when the Knight put up an arm to stop me. "A gypsy of a strange and distant time, traveling in panic all direction blind, aching for the warmth of a burning sun, freezing in the emptiness of where he'd come from... left without a hope of coming home. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. There's none so blind as those who will not see."

He seemed to think a moment, to find the best words for what he wanted to tell me. "Playtime is nearly gone, bell's about to ring. Something calls to me. Those gentle voices I hear explain it all with a sigh. The sounds in my mind just come to me, come see." He led me back to the window and pointed out to the bleak wasteland caught in perpetual twilight. "Visions of paradise, cloudless skies I see. Rainbows on the hill, blue onyx on the sea. Dark cloud of fear is blowing away. We are part of the fire that is burning and from the ashes we can build another day. Somewhere in the dark and silent night our prayer will be heard, make it soon."
